Barn Beam Mantle and Ottoman from ATGCC

Barn beams are one of our favorite materials to use at Against the Grain Creative Concepts. Barn beams add a rustic look to any type of decor with their dramatic and rough texture. They can be used to create fireplace mantels, inside decor, and furniture. Each of our beams are reclaimed from old barns, making them unique and giving them their own individual history. Stables, barns, and silos were once the foundations of America's agricultural society. These structures were built with care and supported by sturdy wooden beams. Today, those reclaimed barn beams can be re-purposed for your custom projects.

We were excited for the opportunity to work on a project using barn beams when one of our longtime clients approached us looking for a barn beam mantel and an ottoman for her sectional. She told us the size and color scheme that she was looking for, and added that she'd like the ottoman to have a cushion on top, as well as storage. We took these specifics and went to work!

For the ottoman, we used white, rough sawn barn wood from the 60th street Kenosha barn teardown. We had a cushion custom-made for the top, that lifts up to reveal additional storage space. We finished the piece off with a coat of Fiddes and Sons Wax in Rugger Brown.

For the fireplace mantle, we used a 6X8 barn beam with mortice holes in the front, also finished in Fiddes and Sons Wax in Rugger Brown. The fireplace was in a corner, so we needed to miter the corners at 68”.
