Some long-time clients approached us after they had purchased a ton of white oak #liveslabs, but had no idea what to do with them.
They had an unfinished room, that they wanted to turn into a bunk room. So we came up with a design to incorporate the live edge slabs (32” wide at the narrow end and 56” at the base and nine feet tall). We sliced them down the middle to create the two upright supports for each bunk, and the frames were then built from #reclaimedbarnwood taken from the Bristol barn tear down.
Underneath the bottom bunk we created two drawers that run the width of the bunks, and used other slabs to create door fronts which were sculpted to meet perfectly with support slabs.
In order to access the top bunk we built custom stairs, constructed from live slabs, with drawers on the first two steps, and the three treads above with cubbies for storage.
For lighting the client wanted hand sconces to be incorporated so we added them to the staircase to light up the lower bunk when needed, and on top of the main support slabs we converted some cattle waterers and wired them so that they can be turned on from bottom bunk along with USB ports and chargers.

The piece of glass had 4 holes where the pole table legs went through it. So we needed to put together a table that utilized the 4 holes. They have a nautical themed beach house, so we took an old ship line that was recovered from Lake Superior and used the dock line as part of the structure of the table along with 4X4 barn beams from the Kansasville barn tear down, alternating the layers
The goal was to make the inside of the table look just like the outside of the table. It was a challenging build to make the rope a structural support. But in the end the results were fantastic. The main legs of this island are hand-hewn beams matching the fireplace mantel below. A custom 3-inch thick 4x4 x 36 walnut butcher block constructed in Ohio acts as the top. This piece features two full drawers that pull out and cubbies on the opposing side.
