Custom Library Periodical Cabinet from ATGCC

At Against the Grain Creative Concepts, we pride ourselves on sourcing materials that have withstood the test of time, bearing the marks and mars of usage which add to their character and speak to their quality, durability, and personality.

One of our favorite challenges is finding ways to use reclaimed materials and repurposing them to combine historical spirit with modern design. That's exactly what we got to do when a client contacted us to create a base for an old periodical cabinet they had in their home. For years they had simply set the periodical cabinet on a table as a makeshift base but decided that they wanted something custom made to match the original piece.

We went to work and started with drawers and a pedestal from an old roll top desk. This roll-top desk featured quarter-sawn oak, which is widely sought after and known for the value it provides in terms of structural integrity and beauty. Two drawers were added to each side for support and to give the piece additional storage space. We then covered the center cubby space with an old-style speaker screen to create a hidden storage area for a modem and router to be placed out of sight! We finished it off by placing the entire piece atop beautiful 8” metal vintage casters.

The clients were thrilled with the outcome, and we were honored that they trusted us to bring their idea to life while preserving the integrity of the original piece. This library periodic cabinet custom build was by far one of our favorite custom furniture projects in 2020!
