The client wanted to utilize walnut wood slabs that came from a tree at their father’s family farm to build barn doors for their entryway closet. There was very little left of the tree after it had been carefully disbursed to the other members of the family. All the other family members had created something from the wood, so the client wanted a statement piece using the walnut to pass down as a remembrance. We needed to use what walnut was left to show off the quality and character, while still fitting the clients aesthetic. We went with a more modern style barn door utilizing black powder-coated aluminum for less weight, but also to showcase the pattern and color of the unique walnut grain pattern in the wood. A client recently approached us with a unique opportunity. They were in the process of working with a contractor for a custom new build and they wanted to tie in some custom projects from Against the Grain Creative Concepts that would bring a farmhouse vibe to their modern new build. They were not exactly sure how they wanted to incorporate the old-world feel of upcycled wood into their new home, so we sat down with them and helped them pick out three projects to deliver the aesthetic they were looking for. For the fireplace mantle, we used a 6X8 barn beam with mortice holes in the front, finished in Fiddes and Sons Wax in Rugger Brown. The fireplace was in a corner, so we needed to miter the corners at 68”. Contact us today, and we’ll work with you from concept to creation bringing you the custom furniture you’ve been dreaming of. Hand-hewn beams now encase this beautiful marble fireplace. The beam used for the mantle measure 10 x12 and the upright beams are 10x10’s. An interesting challenge arose when we had to fabricate the beams at different levels to encase the existing fireplace and facade. The beams, as well as an accompanying beam for the mantle, are all repurposed from a barn in Slinger dating back to the 1800s.
